MASSAGE & MUSCLE THERAPY

Whether seeking relief for a particular condition, searching for a way to help deal with the stresses of everyday life, looking to restore the body's balance or just wanting to maintain health, more and more people are experiencing the benefits of Massage.
INTRODUCTION MASSAGE is manipulation of the soft tissues of the body to prevent and alleviate pain, discomfort, muscle spasm, stress and fatigue while improving circulation and lymph flow, posture, flexibility and range of motion, strengthening the immune system and removing toxins that are present in the muscles.

Soft tissue including skin, muscles, ligaments, tendons and fascia are massaged with oil or lotion using a number of different strokes and techniques, including any of the following:
Acupressure - gentle but firm pressure applied to key points of the body to stimulate the body’s natural ability to heal and release muscle tension.

Deep Tissue Massage focusing on specific deep muscles by treating trigger points to release chronic stress areas due to misalignment, repetitive motion or lingering injuries.

Manual Lymph Drainage using very gentle strokes to encourage the natural circulation of lymph through the body

Reflexology with gentle foot and/or hand massage which applies the stimulus/ reflex principles to help the body heal itself.

Sports Massage enhancing performance and helping to prevent injury, reduce pain and swelling in the body, relax the mind, increasing flexibility and improving recovery rates. Also highly effective in assisting the recovery of an athlete from injury by encouraging healing and stimulating the body’s natural immune function.

Pregnancy Massage to reduce stress, decrease swelling in the arms and legs and relieve aches and pains in muscles and joints (not recommended in 1st trimester)

IMPORTANT Massage Therapy is not a substitute for current medical treatment or medications.

It is essential that you inform your therapist of all known physical conditions, medical conditions and medications and that you keep your therapist updated on any changes.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Who can have a massage? Massage therapy can provide significant benefits for almost everyone. Clients with certain health conditions may need to receive modified treatment. Check with your Primary Caregiver if you are unsure.

What do I wear? Whatever you feel comfortable in. During a massage session only the area being worked on is exposed while the rest of your body is covered with a towel or blanket. It is your choice as to what you wear and while preferable for a full massage that you undress leaving only undies on, if you are uncomfortable removing any items of clothing your massage can be altered to allow for this.

What should I do during the massage? Make yourself comfortable and relax. Many people like to close their eyes and relax completely while others prefer conversation during their session. Feel free to ask your therapist questions about massage in general or the particular technique that you are receiving during your massage

How will I feel after a session? Usually clients feel very relaxed. Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed through tension or repetitive activity. After an initial period of relaxation, most experience increased energy, heightened awareness and greater activity which can last some days.

How soon will I see results? Results vary from one person to another and depend on the reason for your treatment. The benefit of a relaxation massage will be seen almost immediately whereas treatment for an injury may require several sessions depending on severity.

How often should I have a massage? This varies from person to person depending on conditions and the goals you have set. Injury treatments may require weekly visits while for relaxation clients 4-6 weekly may be adequate.

Is it painful? Usually not, as treatment is designed to suit your individual needs. Myofascial release, deep tissue work and trigger point therapy are often uncomfortable but tenderness following these should last no longer than 24hours and the benefits should outweigh any negatives.

Is the cost covered by ACC or Insurance? No, unfortunately, not.
