Help and Advice You are welcome to email me - Margaret - for advice and treatment guidelines

SIMPLE EAR CARE / WAX

If you know you have a blocked ear caused by excessive wax it may be helpful to see your Chemist and purchase 3% Peroxide, Almond Oil, or Olive Oil to see if it will loosen the wax. This may make your ear feel more comfortable.
Your GP may prescibe other drops for loosening the wax if it is badly blocked. This may also help to settle inflammation.

Do not attempt to clear your ear with cotton buds, hairclips or matchsticks! This is harmful to your ear and there is a risk of perforating your eardrum. The ear is naturally self cleansing and earwax is only removed if excessive or causing a problem.

Wax removal can be carried out under "direct vision" ( special ear microscope)

We advise against ear syringing.
Otitis Externa / Outer Ear Infection

Mainstays of management are : local ear toilette ( dry mopping or suction / instruments under direct vision / microscopy), swab for microbiology, topical antibiotic, steroidal, anti microbial, anti fungal ear drops, topical astringents, oto-wicks.

Serious cases involving spread of the infection outside of the ear canal requires systemic treatment. ( oral antibiotics)

Prevention of recurrence is important.
Keeping the ear water free and not using cotton buds

You may require an appt for ear toilette - please phone the clinic
Otitis Media and Otitis Media with Effusion (glue ear)

This is inflammation of the middle ear - behind the eardrum - and usually requires a visit to your GP for examination and treatment.
There may be an acute infection in the middle ear with purulent fluid, fever and pain, hearing loss and pressure.

You may have non infected fluid in the middle ear causing hearing loss and a blocked feeling. You may need a nasal spray and/or steam inhalations to clear the Eustachian Tubes.

You may require antibiotic treatment, and if the ear is discharging - you will require an ear toilette (suction) to clear the discharge.
Hearing Aids

Many people are fortunate to be able to wear aids to hearing - therefore bringing a normal level of hearing back into their lives.

As hearing aids are potentially blocking the ear canal it is a good idea to obtain regular ear examination. Wax can become trapped in the canal , blocking sound and affecting the hearing aid function. This can be removed enabling restoration of hearing aid function.

It is not advisable for those with hearing aids to have the ear syringed. There is the risk of infection, tinnitus and further damage to hearing.
